Surgical ResearchFor the past academic year I have been able to participate in the Department of Surgery Research lab at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine under the direction of Dr. Charles Caldwell. The main purpose of my research was to explore the role of lung microparticles in the immune system’s response to bacterial infection. Throughout this process I developed laboratory skills such as gel-electrophoresis, western blots, and fluorescent imaging. I was able to share my research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium as a poster presentation. Furthermore, this research contributed to a soon to be published articles, Amitriptyline Usage Exacerbates the Immune Suppression Following Burn Injury. Through this experience I was able to learn the importance of medical research for future clinical care. In addition, I was able to interact with Surgical Residents to observe the role research plays throughout residency. This experience has revealed my passion for research and a deeper desire to combine clinical care and scientific discovery in my future career as a physician.

To showcase my experience I have included my poster. This poster was also my capstone for my biology degree. This exemplifies my learning because I was challenged to explain the research in a way that clearly communicated the discoveries in a way that appealed to a broad audience.
